How much does glass weigh? (quick answer)
As a rule of thumb, glass weighs about 2.5 kg per square metre for every 1 mm of thickness. So 6 mm glass is roughly 15 kg per square metre, and a 2 m by 1 m pane of 6 mm glass weighs about 30 kg. For a full breakdown by thickness, see our guide on

Glass weight per square metre, by thickness
Float, toughened and laminated glass are all soda-lime glass with a density of about 2,500 kg per cubic metre, which gives the 2.5 kg per mm rule. Per square metre:
4 mm: 10 kg
6 mm: 15 kg
8 mm: 20 kg
10 mm: 25 kg
12 mm: 30 kg
15 mm: 37.5 kg
19 mm: 47.5 kg
Toughening does not change the weight, so 6 mm toughened glass weighs the same as 6 mm float. Laminated glass is the two panes plus a thin interlayer, and a sealed unit is both panes together, so a 4-16-4 double glazed unit weighs about 20 kg per square metre. Does the calculator work for double glazing and laminated glass?
Yes. You can choose single glass, laminated glass or a sealed double-glazed unit, and the calculator adjusts the weight for each.

Why does glass weight matter when I order?

How much does 6 mm toughened glass weigh?
About 15 kg per square metre, the same as 6 mm float glass, because toughening changes the strength of the glass and not its density. A 1 m by 2 m pane of 6 mm toughened glass weighs around 30 kg.

Standard soda-lime glass, which covers float, toughened and laminated glass, has a density of about 2,500 kg per cubic metre. That is where the rule of thumb comes from: 2.5 kg per square metre for every 1 mm of thickness.
