Glass lamination options

Our stock laminated glass sheets are supplied with PVB or acoustic interlayers. But this is just the start. Thanks to our state-of-the-art glass laminating facility, you can customise your order with dozens of decorative and practical options.

Industry applications

Annealed and safety glass laminates are among the most versatile glass products on the market. Their strength and shatter resistance make them ideal for applications where heightened safety and security are required. Here are just a few of their many use cases.

Explore applications

In very rare cases, tempered glass can spontaneously break months or years after installation.

That's why we recommend heat soak testing for all our toughened and heat-strengthened glass products – including toughened glass laminate.

Our in-house testing process simulates real glazing conditions, allowing us to root out problematic glass sheets long before they're installed.

For you, this means extra peace of mind, less hassle and potential cost savings in future.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is laminated glass?

In simple terms, laminated glass is like a glass sandwich. It's composed of two or more glass sheets that are bonded together.

The individual layers can be made of toughened (tempered) glass, heat-strengthened glass or standard annealed glass.

Laminated glass also features an interlayer between each set of glass sheets. Most commonly, these are made of polyvinyl butyral (PVB) – a clear resin that delivers excellent optical clarity.

But this is far from the only option. Here at ToughGlaze, we offer a broad selection of laminated glass products, ranging from acoustic glass to decorative options with fabric and mesh interlayers.

  • What are the advantages of laminated glass?

One of the biggest advantages of glass laminate is that it won't shatter. Even if broken, the individual glass layers remain bonded to the PVB interlayer. This makes it much safer than annealed glass, which is liable to shatter into large, sharp pieces.

Laminated glass is also more rigid than annealed glass and offers better UV protection.

  • Where is laminated glass used?

Toughened or safety glass laminate is used in situations where safety and security are paramount.

Common applications include residential and commercial skylights, glass balustrades, car windscreens and security doors. It's also often used for shop windows, as it makes it very difficult for would-be thieves to gain access.

Annealed laminated glass, meanwhile, is popular among architects. This is because it improves safety and security while avoiding the optical distortion often seen with toughened glass.

  • Can you cut laminated glass?

It's possible to cut laminated glass sheets provided the glass isn't toughened (tempered). However, it's a complicated process that's difficult to perform without specialised tools.

You can't cut toughened laminated glass. This type of glass will instantly shatter if its structural integrity is disturbed.

Our advice: leave it to the professionals. Here at ToughGlaze, we offer custom-cut laminated glass that's shaped to your exact requirements using state-of-the-art machinery.

  • What are the available thicknesses of laminated glass?

We supply laminated glass sheets in thicknesses ranging from 9.5 to 60 millimetres. The exact thicknesses available depend on the types of glass and interlayers used.
