If you work in architecture, you'll know that nothing matters more than details. That's no more apparent than in the granular world of glazing.

In this corner of the industry, tolerances are measured in millimetres, and those millimetres matter. Even the slightest deviation can lead to a costly replacement down the line.

This is a key reason why glazing schedules are used. These are detailed charts or tables on architectural blueprints that list every piece of glass, window and glass door in a building project.

If you're imagining a bullet point list that says "first door", "second door" and so on, think again.

Glazing schedules are highly detailed documents that cover everything from thickness to tint, from safety ratings to frame types.

They're used by builders and glass manufacturers to ensure glazing meets specifications. Without them, project managers are liable to make manufacturing, compliance or installation mistakes.


If you're tasked with putting one together, you may feel a little overwhelmed. This guide breaks down what's required – and why it matters.

What should be included on a glazing schedule?

Glazing schedules contain lots of different information. That includes:

  • Locations and ID tags
  • Physical dimensions
  • Glass thickness and makeup
  • Frame materials
  • Frame operational types
  • Safety or energy performance ratings
  • Additional notes

Together, these pieces of information create a kind of master list. They link architectural floor plans to material orders and building compliance codes for joined-up thinking and coordinated project execution.


Let's break them down in more detail.

1. Locations and ID tags

First up, a glazing schedule will identify and locate all the glazing in a project. It will contain a mark or tag – typically a unique code – that matches the blueprints.


The schedule will specify the room, area or exterior elevation where the glass is to be installed. It will also specify how many units of that specification are needed.


2. Physical dimensions

Next up is information related to dimensions and sizing. This will include:

  • Nominal or frame width and height measurements
  • Rough openings (ROs – the structural wall opening size)
  • The distance from the finished floor level to the bottom of the glass (sill height)

3. Glass type and makeup

Thirdly, the glazing schedule will include information about the type of glass itself.

This will include whether the glass is:


  • Single-, double- or triple-glazed
  • Laminated
  • Supplied as an insulated glass unit (IGU)

It will also specify the thickness of the glass, its tint and any necessary reflective coatings. It will note whether toughened or laminated panes are required by Building Regulations, too.


4. Frame materials

The glazing schedule will also include information about frames and hardware. Frame materials will be specified – aluminium, timber, uPVC, steel and so on – along with the finish and colour of the frames.


5. Frame operational types

The operational type of frame will be specified – for instance, whether the window or door is to have a fixed, casement, sliding or awning opening. It will also note the direction of swing or slide (so-called "handing").


6. Safety and energy performance ratings

A glazing schedule will include performance and compliance requirements. These are split into two main categories: energy ratings and safety codes.


For energy ratings, the glazing schedule will specify required U-values, solar heat gain coefficients (SHGCs) and any acoustic ratings.


And in terms of safety codes, the document could include fire ratings, impact resistance or means of escape.

7. Additional notes

Finally, a glazing schedule could include extra notes on installation or any considerations or constraints if the property is a heritage or conservation site.

Why is a glazing schedule important?

A glazing schedule is important because it ensures accuracy, compliance and coordination in a range of areas: from procurement to pricing, from performance to safety.

Procurement

A glazing schedule assists with procurement by giving manufacturers the exact dimensions and product types they need. This helps avoid costly mistakes and helps manage lead times. This is especially useful when lead times on custom glass are long.


Pricing

It also helps contractors get accurate pricing from glass suppliers. This helps them stay within budget and in control of projects.


Performance

In terms of energy performance, glazing schedules help prove the building meets energy efficiency and thermal insulation regulations. This helps reassure all parties that the project is compliant.

Safety

The same goes for safety. Glazing schedules demonstrate a commitment to safety and compliance through the specification of specialised safety glass.

It helps demonstrate a commitment to building user comfort, too – especially when soundproofing and solar heat gain control are specified.

Other benefits

It should be clear by now that a glazing schedule helps managers manage their projects and reassures all interested parties that things are under control and compliant.


But the benefits of glazing schedules extend beyond stakeholders to installers and work crews. A well-written glazing schedule guides installers, telling them where each window and door should go.


It also aligns different teams. For instance, it can ensure builders have prepared ROs before heavy glass units arrive for installation.

Do glazing schedules have other names?

"Glazing schedule" is a common name for this type of document. It's sometimes known, however, as a "window schedule". The difference is that a glazing schedule can cover windows and doors, whereas a window schedule covers only windows.


A fenestration schedule is similar but broader. It covers all openings in a building envelope – windows, glass doors and curtain walls.


Often, doors and windows are combined into a single master chart called a "door and window schedule". This details all panels, including glazing. 


Finally, there are glass and mirror schedules. These focus on the interior or exterior glass types and thicknesses rather than the frames.
