What is fabric laminated glass?
Create stunning fabric-on-glass effects
Our unique textile laminates are cut from different cloth.
Fabric laminated glass is a decorative laminated glass product with a layer of fabric sealed between two panes of glass. It combines the strength and clarity of laminated glass with the warmth, texture and colour of real textiles.
At ToughGlaze, our fabric laminated glass is supplied under the product code TG FI. The fabric can be almost anything, from woven cloth to printed silks, patterned textiles, lace or custom-designed fabrics. The glass protects the fabric from dust, moisture and damage, while the fabric brings a fresh palette of colours, textures and visual effects that flat glass simply cannot match.
It is also known as fabric interlayer glass, textile laminated glass or glass with fabric inside. Whichever name you have heard, it is the same product.
Specifiers use it where they want glass to be a feature, not just a glazing element. Partitions, balustrades, splashbacks, architectural glazing, feature walls and decorative screens are all common applications.
How fabric laminated glass differs from related products
This comes up often, so it is worth being clear. The four products below are sometimes confused, and the wrong one ends up on the spec sheet.
| Product | What it is | When to specify |
|---|---|---|
| Fabric laminated glass | Two glass panes with a fabric or textile interlayer | Fabric laminated glass Two glass panes with a fabric or textile interlayer Decorative panels with woven, printed or patterned fabrics |
| Mesh laminated glass | Two glass panes with a metal mesh interlayer | Industrial or architectural look using brass, bronze, copper or steel mesh |
| Coloured glass interlayers | Two glass panes with a tinted PVB interlayer | Solid colour panels, no fabric or mesh |
| Standard laminated glass | Two glass panes with a clear PVB interlayer | Safety glass for windows and partitions where decoration is not the priority |
If a project calls for the textural beauty of textiles inside the glass itself, fabric laminated glass is the right specification. If the brief is asking for the look of woven metal, see our mesh laminated glass page instead.

The interlayer does two jobs. It bonds the glass and the fabric together, and it determines the structural and environmental performance of the finished panel. We offer three options as standard.
Interlayer options explained
Waterproof polymer (default for TG FI).
A water-resistant interlayer developed internally at ToughGlaze. Suited to bathrooms, wet rooms, splashbacks and exterior IGU applications. This is what makes TG FI usable in damp or outdoor environments where standard PVB is not the right specification.
SGP (SentryGlas Plus).
Around five times stronger and up to 100 times stiffer than standard PVB. The right choice for frameless structural glass, large balustrades, and any application where the panel is loadbearing or self-supporting.
Standard PVB.
The traditional laminated glass interlayer. Cost-effective, available with acoustic-grade variants for sound-control applications, and suitable for most internal decorative uses. Available with clear, coloured or acoustic options.

Plus, we offer a bespoke project sampling and mock-up service so you can explore patterns and textures before committing to a production run. Particularly useful for architects and designers specifying TG FI for the first time, or for clients who want to sign off the look of a particular fabric before production starts.
Like all our laminated glass products, TG FI is built to last and is custom-made to your specification. Got an application in mind? You have got options.
Reassuringly robust
Any type of glass
TG FI fabric laminated glass can incorporate any type of glass to meet almost any use case. Need toughened glass for safety? Heat-strengthened glass for thermal resistance? Annealed for decorative interior use? Low-iron for the clearest possible view of the fabric? We can handle it all in-house.
Water-resistant interlayers (standard)
TG FI comes as standard with a waterproof laminated glass interlayer material. This makes it suitable for external applications when integrated into an insulated glass unit (IGU), and for damp interior environments such as bathrooms, wet rooms and splashbacks behind cookers and sinks.
SGP interlayers
Need extra structural strength? Choose our SGP (ionoplast) interlayer, which is five times stronger and up to 100 times stiffer than conventional laminate materials. Specified for frameless balustrades, glass floors and structural panels.
PVB interlayers
TG FI is also available as a PVB laminate with clear, coloured or acoustic interlayers. The right choice for cost-conscious internal projects where the standard PVB performance is enough.

If you have your specification ready, send us the details and we will quote your project.

Where it is used
Common applications for TG FI
TG FI is specified across architecture, interior design, retail, hospitality, healthcare and high-end residential. Below are the most common applications. Each one can be processed and cut to your exact specification.

Fabric laminated partitions
Transform glass partition walls into statement architectural features. We supply partition manufacturers with high-quality, custom-made fabric laminate sheets, ready to drop into office breakouts, meeting rooms, hotel lobbies, restaurants and retail interiors. The fabric interlayer adds visual depth without blocking light, which keeps open-plan spaces feeling open while introducing softness and structure. Pair it with sandblasting or a coloured interlayer for added privacy.
Fabric laminated splashbacks
Want to offer customers a fresh look? We can manufacture textile laminated splashbacks with mirrored or colour-coated glass to create an impressive opaque effect. The water-resistant interlayer means TG FI splashbacks stand up to commercial kitchen, bathroom and wet-area conditions.
Fabric laminated balustrades
Achieve the perfect balance of beauty and practicality. Buy robust, fabric laminated glass for interior or exterior balustrades. With an SGP interlayer, the same panel can be used in frameless and structural balustrade systems. The fabric adds privacy and softness without losing the open feel of glass, making it a designer's favourite for residential staircases, mezzanines and balcony fronts.
Fabric laminated glazing and feature walls
Create beautiful glazing designs that incorporate eye-catching textiles. TG FI can be incorporated into insulated glass units for exterior application, where the water-resistant interlayer holds up to weather exposure. Common on commercial facades, atrium glazing, decorative window panels and large interior feature walls in hospitality and retail projects.
Why ToughGlaze
Specified by architects, contractors, glaziers, partition installers and interior designers across the UK
Water-resistant interlayer, developed internally at ToughGlaze.
TG FI comes as standard with our own water-resistant interlayer. This makes it suitable for external applications, IGU integration, and damp interior environments such as bathrooms, wet rooms and splashbacks where standard PVB is not the right choice.

How it is made
How TG FI is processed
Every TG FI panel is custom-made for the specification. Here is how a panel goes from order to delivery.
Step 1. Specification and quote.
You send us your panel size, glass type, fabric selection and interlayer requirement. We will quote your project.
Step 2. Glass cutting and edging.
Glass is cut to size, edges are seamed or polished depending on the application, and any drilling or notching is done before lamination.
Step 3. Fabric preparation.
The chosen fabric is inspected and prepared for lamination. Each fabric is checked beforehand to confirm it can withstand the lamination process. For bespoke designs, we work with the fabric supplier to source the right material.
Step 4. Lamination.
The glass-interlayer-fabric-interlayer-glass sandwich is bonded into a single, sealed laminated panel that meets BS EN 14449.
Step 5. Finishing and quality check.
Each panel is inspected for clarity, fabric position, edge finish and dimensional accuracy.
Step 6. Packaging and delivery.
Panels are packed and loaded onto our own fleet for direct delivery, depending on the order. UK mainland distribution is supported through our in-house logistics.
FAQs
Frequently asked questions
What is fabric interlayer glass?
Fabric interlayer glass (or fabric laminated glass) is a special type of glass laminate that highlights the beauty, colour and texture of fabrics. Like all glass laminates, it consists of an interlayer material sandwiched between at least two panes of glass. Uniquely, fabric laminated glass also includes a textile interlayer. This construction protects and frames the fabric, making it ideal for architectural, structural and decorative applications. At ToughGlaze, our fabric laminated glass is supplied under the product code TG FI.
What fabrics can be used in fabric laminated glass?
Almost any. Woven cloth, delicate textiles, lace, printed fabrics, patterned silks and custom-designed fabrics are all options. Each fabric is checked before lamination to confirm it can withstand the temperature and pressure of the autoclave process. If you are unsure whether a particular fabric is suitable, send us a sample and our team will advise.
Can fabric laminated glass be installed outdoors?
Yes. Our fabric laminates are suitable for external applications. This is thanks to a unique waterproof interlayer, developed internally at ToughGlaze. Standard PVB is not suitable for external use because of moisture exposure. The water-resistant interlayer is required for any panel destined for an insulated glass unit (IGU), external balustrade, or any environment where moisture is a factor.
What interlayers are available?
You can specify almost any laminated glass interlayer material, whether it is a woven cloth, delicate textile or custom-printed fabric. This textile layer can be combined with other decorative effects to create unique designs. For instance, you can choose a mirrored or colour-coated glass layer to create an opaque look. TG FI is also supplied with a waterproof interlayer as standard. If extra structural strength is needed, an optional SGP ionoplast interlayer can be applied.
What thickness does fabric laminated glass come in?
Standard thickness ranges from 9.5 mm to 60 mm. The right thickness depends on the application, the glass type specified and the interlayer build-up. We will confirm the right specification for your project as part of the quote.
What is the maximum size for fabric laminated glass?
The standard maximum is 2,600 mm by 4,300 mm, subject to the design and the fabric specified. Larger panels may be possible depending on the specifics. If your project needs something outside this range, talk to us before specifying.
Can fabric laminated glass be used as safety glass?
Yes. With toughened glass plies and an appropriate interlayer, TG FI meets the requirements of laminated safety glass. It performs to the relevant BSI standards for impact resistance and post-breakage behaviour. Specify toughened plies if the panel will be used at low level, in a door, or in any setting where impact safety glass is required.
Can I see a sample before I commit to a project?
Yes. We offer a bespoke project sampling and mock-up service. Send us your project brief and we will produce a sample panel using your chosen fabric, glass and interlayer combination. This is particularly useful for high-spec architectural projects where the panel needs sign-off from the client or designer before production.
