This comes up often. Georgian wired glass (sometimes called wire mesh glass or wired safety glass) is a traditional grid-pattern glass made by casting a wire mesh into a single annealed glass pane. It is a different product to TG MI.

TG MI is a modern decorative laminate. The mesh is for visual effect, not fire performance. If you need fire-rated glass for your project, see our fire-rated glass page for E30 to EI120 options tested to BS EN 1364-1:2015.

Specifications

Glass and interlayer options

When you work with ToughGlaze, you get access to one of the UK's most advanced glass processing facilities. With our equipment and industry knowledge, we can customise TG MI to meet almost any specification.

1. Toughened or annealed glass

As a form of decorative laminated glass, TG MI can incorporate various glass types to suit a wide range of applications. Choose from annealed, heat-strengthened or tempered glass with the wire mesh interlayer of your choice.

2. Waterproof interlayer

As standard, TG MI comes with a unique waterproof interlayer that's been specially developed by our experts. This makes it ideal for exterior applications, as well as damp environments like bathrooms.

3. SGP interlayer

SGP (ionoplast) laminates are five times stronger and up to 100 times stiffer than conventional laminate materials. Ideal for frameless structural glass.

4. PVB interlayer

Standard PVB laminate materials are also available. These afford impressive strength and can be custom-made for acoustic applications.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

  • What is mesh laminated glass?

TG MI mesh laminated glass is a type of laminated decorative glass. It consists of a decorative metal mesh sandwiched between protective glass layers. It also includes a structural interlayer made of PVB, waterproof polymer or extra-strong SGP.

Mesh laminate is ideal for architectural, structural and decorative applications. We've selected a diverse catalogue of materials, colours and mesh designs to give you maximum aesthetic flexibility. You can also complement the mesh interlayer with a broad range of decorative glass effects, such as digital printing, sandblasting and colour coating.

  • Is mesh laminate suitable for exterior use?

Yes. Mesh laminated glass can be incorporated into insulated glass units (IGUs) for exterior applications. What's more, our laminated mesh includes a special water-resistant interlayer as standard. This makes it suitable for wet or damp environments.

  • Is your mesh glass fire-rated?

TG MI is a form of laminated decorative glass with a mesh interlayer. It is not the same product as wire mesh glass, which is often specified when some level of fire resistance is required.

Our mesh laminated glass is intended for decorative and structural applications and is not fire-rated. We do, however, offer fire-resistant tempered glass that's E30-rated and tested to BS EN 1364-1:2015.

  • Is mesh laminated glass the same as Georgian wired glass?

No. Georgian wired glass is a traditional fire-resistant glass with a cast-in wire mesh, used in some legacy fire safety applications. Mesh laminated glass is a modern decorative laminate. The mesh in TG MI is for visual effect, not fire performance. If you need fire-rated glass, see our fire-rated glass page.

  • What mesh materials and patterns are available?

We stock a curated range of mesh designs across five materials: brass, bronze, copper, stainless steel and aluminium. We work with leading architectural mesh manufacturers including Cadisch MDA, GKD, Mesh Art, TTM Rossi, Syntarqui and Chelsea Artisan. If none of the stocked options fit, we can source bespoke meshes to match your specification.

  • What sizes can you make?

Maximum laminating size is 2,600 mm by 4,300 mm. Thickness ranges from 9.5 mm to 60 mm. The maximum continuous mesh size depends on the roll width of the chosen mesh, so larger panels may need to be split or specified with a particular pattern in mind. Get in touch with your project specification and we will confirm what's possible.

  • Can mesh laminated glass be used as safety glass?

Yes, with the right build-up. Specified with toughened glass plies and an appropriate structural interlayer, TG MI can meet the requirements of laminated safety glass under the relevant BSI standards. We will confirm the build-up needed for your project as part of the quote.

  • Can I get a sample before I commit?

Yes. We offer a bespoke project sampling and mockup service. Send us your project brief and we will help you choose the right mesh, glass and interlayer combination. Particularly useful for high-spec architectural projects where the panel needs sign-off from the client or designer before production.
