What is it?

What is LED glass?

LED glass is illuminated glass used in walls, panels, doors and more. It's decorative glass with the light built in – no bulky fittings, no separate lightbox.

You'll hear it called a few different things: backlit glass, light-up glass, illuminated glass or LED glass panels. They all point to the same clever idea – a glass panel, lit by LEDs, that turns a plain surface into a glowing feature.

At ToughGlaze, we call ours TG WOL, short for World of Light. Your design is fired into the glass during the toughening process, then edge-lit by Spanlite LED technology. The result glows beautifully and lasts as long as the glass itself.

How it is made

From print to light: how TG WOL is made

Wondering how the light gets in?

First, the printing. Ceramic inks are applied to the glass and then fired in a furnace. This "traps" the image in the glass during the toughening process, ensuring that it lasts as long as the glass itself. Incorporate solid or partial vision effects into a design that won't fade, crack or scratch.

Then, the light. We use Spanlite's edge-lit glass system to incorporate LEDs into the panel. It's lit from the top and bottom horizontal edges, illuminating panels up to 2.7 metres in height – or 3.5 metres with two light sources.

The LEDs themselves are up to 80% more efficient than fluorescent bulbs, converting around 95% of their energy into light. Bright where it counts, lean where it matters.

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

  • What is LED glass and how does it work?

LED glass is illuminated glass used in walls, panels, doors and more. We use Spanlite's edge-lit glass system to incorporate LEDs into digitally printed glass. Your design is "fired in" to the glass during the toughening process. It's then edge-lit from the top and bottom horizontal edges. The nature of the manufacturing process means that the ceramic ink is pretty much indestructible – your glass LED lights won't fade, scratch or crack.

  • Are LED lights energy-efficient?

LED lights are up to 80% more efficient than fluorescent bulbs. This is because they convert around 95% of their energy into light.

  • How big can illuminated glass panels be?

At ToughGlaze, we make LED glass panels up to 1200 x 3600 millimetres. Spanlite technology is then used to illuminate them up to 2.7 metres in height (or 3.5 metres if using two light sources).

  • How much does LED glass cost?

The price of LED glass depends on the panel size, the design you want printed, the printing option and the lighting specification. Because every TG WOL panel is made to measure, we price every project individually. Send us your sizes or drawings and we'll come back with a clear quote. No obligation, no hard sell.

  • What's the difference between LED glass and backlit glass?

Backlit glass usually means a panel lit from behind, which needs space for a lightbox or separate light source. TG WOL is edge-lit: the LEDs sit at the top and bottom edges of the panel itself, so the whole thing stays slim while the glass glows evenly. If you've been searching for backlit glass panels, edge-lit LED glass will usually do the same job in less space.

  • Can I have an LED glass splashback?

Yes. Our LED glass is ideal for splashbacks, partitions and more. A printed, illuminated splashback brings light and colour into a kitchen, and because the design is fired into the glass, it stands up to daily life without fading, cracking or scratching.
